Recently, I decided to get my nails done.
Wow, this sounds like a fascinating post, doesn’t it? Stick with me.
So, like I was saying. I decided to go and get a manicure and pedicure. Now, I’m not one to spend money at the drop of a hat; I get my nails done maybe three times a year and I feel guilty every time. I mean… they’re just going to chip, and odds are I’ll mess them up before I’m even in the parking lot, so the expense does not normally feel justified.
But, I had been working really hard on quite a few different projects and I was feeling really run-down, so as I was walking into the salon, I decided to not just get a manicure and pedicure. I decided to get the fancy kinds. The ones where they use lavender scented scrubs and hot stones and offer you wine throughout the two-hour fingers and toes transformation.
But before even walking into the salon, I decided to partake in another form of self-care, one that I rarely, if ever, even attempt.
I put my phone in the glove compartment of my car and went inside without it.
And for the first few minutes, I felt apprehensive. I was convinced I was going to miss an important call or text or, at best, just be really, really bored.
But then, I just… forgot. I forgot about my phone, I forgot about everything waiting for me outside of the salon, and I just sat. I didn’t even think, truthfully. And when I got out, yes, there were a few texts and notifications, but there was nothing earth-shattering that I had missed.
My life is generally kept between my hands, trapped in the screen I’m staring at. As uncomfortable as it initially was, putting that kind of physical and mental space between myself and that device was exactly what I needed.
And my nails looked pretty freaking good, too.
I absolutely love hearing the different ways people practice self-care because it seems like the ways we can be kind to ourselves and give ourselves a break are limitless. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
- Face masks
- Going to the movies
- Bingeing a Netflix show
- Listening to a podcast
- Going for a long walk
- Getting myself Starbucks
- Buying something off Etsy
- Chocolate. Just… chocolate.
